Causes of Failure in University Exams

Published On: April 4, 2020 - Last Updated on: February 26, 2024 Filed Under: Career

It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all — in which case, you fail by default

Students go to universities and colleges to learn and experience things that would help them in their practical life. These experiences bring with them loads of lessons. But alongside that, these experiences are to be learned from. But some students are unable to give up their past practices which result in their failure.

In today’s world, where there are hundreds of distractions present, it can get very difficult to manage studies with every other social activity going on as well. But if you try to plan your day accordingly, you can easily give time to studies and still have time left for other activities, which are equally important.

Why These Students Fail?

Just like there are several factors of a student’s success, there are various reasons why some of them fail or get lower grades.

Some students might think they do not get an equivalent reward for their hard work. They think they were prepared for the exam but the results are contradictory.

Why?

What are the reasons that these students fail? Here’s major ones

Procrastinator

A procrastinator always plans on doing the task, but later. Laziness is also a big factor for failure. Some students always push their exam preparation to the last minute. Because of which they always fail to cover the whole syllabus.

Not Studying Productively

What does studying productively mean? Basically, it is to study with your full attention and concentration. But because of the present distractions, be it cell phones or social apps, students fail to study ‘productively’. Instead, they’re just reading stuff out of a textbook without actually focusing and grasping it.

Not Following the Given Pattern

Some students observe the specific pattern set by each examiner and tend to plan their preparations accordingly. While others totally ignore this fact and end up getting lower grades.

Lack of Concentration During Lecture

Lack of concentration is also another motive for failure. We see only a few students in every class are concentrated and focused during the lectures. The rest of the students are partially focused on the lecture because they are too involved in other activities such as in campus sport activities, friends, movies and TV, internet, etc. due to which they lose record on the lectures and assignments.

Inadequate Time Management Skills

Managing time, prioritizing your work and scheduling it, is a very helpful and important habit. Not only does it help keep record of your work, but it also highlights your work in progress, deadlines and a number of other things which can slip out of your mind. But sadly, the majority of students don’t realize it. Instead of planning their studies in advance, they tend to push it till the last day.

Lack of Interest in a Particular Subject

Lack of interest can be another reason of failure. A student may find a specific subject difficult or boring and therefore not pay enough attention to it leaving major gaps in knowledge.

Pressure from Others to do Well Leading to Stress and Overthinking:

Pressure of getting good grades and not being able to achieve it can lead to stress and overthinking. Social comparison between high achievers and students with lower grades always results in self-doubt and over thinking.

Student facing stress should seek help at once.

Social Pressure on Students to Work and Earn whilst also Studying

Some students due to financial crisis or to help support their families start working whilst also studying. These students having a tough schedule are unable to give their full dedication towards their studies and end up getting lower grades. Studies have shown that almost 30% students in France are working more than 20 hours per week.

Many recent researches show that the stress level of students goes higher as the university exam approaches.
