5 Tips to Get Paid More

Last Updated on June 10, 2022 By Ayesha Saeed Leave a Comment

Every employee has gone through the dilemma of wanting to get paid more but not sure how to move forward with it. There are plenty of reasons why one could possibly want a pay increase – there is a new investment you would like to venture on, you are starting a new family, or you could just simply be wanting to see your professional worth in the company. Whatever it is, make sure that before making any move, you align your goals and your experience during your expectation setting.

Every profession differs and industry practice varies, so understand that you cannot be comparing apples to oranges. Another smart thing is that you should probably do market research and conduct industry benchmarking. There are a bunch of salary negotiation guides that can help you on your negotiation journey.

Meanwhile, here are five practical tips you can use to get paid more.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Keep track of your accomplishments
  • 2. Acquire new Skills
  • 3. Learn from others
  • 4. Research your Market Value
  • 5. Chat it up with your Boss

1. Keep track of your accomplishments

Over the years, you have attended important seminars or workshops and have made significant accomplishments in your professional career. While these may seem like fond memories to remember, the better move you can do is keep track of all these things.

If you are not one to stash a bunch of papers in your office, digitalize copies of your certificates and create a simple and organized list of the milestones you have achieved for yourself and the organizations you are working for. This may not seem much but these things will surely come in handy on the day you walk into the management office for your negotiations.

2. Acquire new Skills

While you surely are great at what you do, there are a hundred more skills that you could learn to excel in your field. Don’t get too cozy in your comfort zone and try to freelance once in a while. Find something to learn and challenge yourself to acquire new learnings in a certain field.

This will not only enrich your work prowess but will also give you an exceptional edge in your profession. Don’t get intimidated that it might hurt your savings because there are plenty of classes that you can get for free online or for a minimal amount of investment.

3. Learn from others

While it’s not a good idea to compare yourself to others, it is an ideal move to learn from your peers. People have different ways of working and they might have a strategy on how to do things more efficiently which you can pick on and apply in your own day-to-day job.

We all have our own techniques we use to make our jobs easier or faster and you can make use of what others do better by shadowing them. As you go along with this process, you might be surprised by how integrating new ways into your work will greatly improve your performance and become a tool you can later bank on.

4. Research your Market Value

There are times when we want something too much that we get too focused on that one thing that we fail to see the bigger picture. Again, before even thinking about doing any form of negotiation, make sure your feet are on the ground. Researching your market value shouldn’t be a difficult task. There are job posting websites these days that will give you an idea about your value in the market.

All you need to look for is the same level of the category of your job title, make a quick comparison of how much others in the same title get, and take a look at the job description to see if you are doing around the same level of work. This will give you a rough idea of how much your counterparts around the area are getting.

5. Chat it up with your Boss

Before anything gets out of hand, why not sit down with your boss and share your thoughts and sentiments on the matter? If there is anything he would appreciate, it is your openness and transparency. Letting your boss know how you feel will be a great step moving forward if you want to go through with this pay hike.

Make him understand your goals but make sure that when you come knocking on his office, you come with an objective basis and not just merely emotions. With the proper approach, who knows, you might be walking out from his desk with a smile on your face.

Earning more will allow you to prepare for the future. Follow these tips and hope for the best!

Responsibilities & Duties of Employee [ Employer Rights ]

Last Updated on July 28, 2021 By Lisa C. Townes Leave a Comment

The responsibility of an employee to a business or employer is as important as the business itself. Like other assets of businesses – employees are also an asset. Fulfilling responsibilities and meeting employer expectations will be important in success.

Few employee characteristics can make you good because more than 90% of the population is the employee at different stages, some are CEOs of companies but not owner and other are office staff or cleaner.

In general, you need to compete in the market. There are hundreds of applicants for few vacancies, how can you avail those good jobs? Even if you are already at work, how would you move for improvements with some bad comments from the previous employer?  Taking responsibilities and duties seriously would make a difference.

Table of Contents

  • Top Duties of Employee
    • Rendering Personal Services
    • Compliance of Lawful Orders
    • General Duty of Fidelity
    • Confidential Information
    • The Property of the Employer
    • Indemnity

Top Duties of Employee

The responsibilities of an employee in businesses are different depending upon the nature and volume of business as well as the department of employment. Duties and Functions of the Human Resource Department include personnel management but in the marketing department, they maintain goodwill and generate sales.

employee duties in office

These may be slightly changed according to the current phase of business, Let say; in days of the boom; the finance department can issue millions for advertisement but in the time of recession, their main goal is to reduce cost & expenses.

So, it depends!

Rendering Personal Services

It is the duty of the employee to render personal service according to the terms of the contract. He may not delegate his duty without the consent of the employer. Being an accountant, you must provide the best of your bookkeeping services that benefit the employer in long run.

Compliance of Lawful Orders

The employee’s duty is to obey his employer’s lawful orders. Lawful orders are those orders given by the employer within the terms of the contract of employment and which are neither illegal nor contrary to public policy.

Let say, the employer wants the salesman to complete monthly tasks, it is to be obeyed but in this case; employer’s unethical tasks shouldn’t be followed.

General Duty of Fidelity

There is a general duty of fidelity imposed on the employee, and this will be extended by the courts to meet the circumstances of any case.

Confidential Information

Where the employee possesses information connected with the employer’s trade secrets or lists of customers, the employee may not use this information freely. The employee has a duty to respect his employer’s confidential information.

This duty continues after the contract of service has been discharged.

The Property of the Employer

Where copyrights, an invention, and a patent represents work done by an employee under a contract of employment, then the copyright, an invention, and the patent are industrial information, the property of the employer.

It does not belong to the employee in these circumstances.

Indemnity

Where a servant, in the usual course of his duties, causes injury or loss to a third party through want of due care in the performance of his duties, the master will normally be liable.

Where the third party succeeds against the master, the servant is under a duty to give an indemnity.

Final words

The employer in business hires an employee for the purpose to expand the business and manage different parts of a business. Every employer has the right to hire and dismiss a temporary or permanent employee (according to employment contract) depending upon his/her devotion towards work.

You are being paid for the services you are supposed to offer.

If being in staff, you do not perform them well – you are cheating the employer.

Enthusiasm in Business & Real Life

Not only business, everything in which you have an interest works better for you if only you have passion combined with your interest. This is one of the characteristics of entrepreneurs which keeps them one step ahead of their competitors. Some people just start a business with the main focus on income generation.

But this is a huge mistake because only passion can drive you to work for the success of your business. Money and prosperity of your business are interrelated with the importance of enthusiasm which is the driving force for you to strive hard.

Entrepreneurial Approach

Starting a business without any sound knowledge of market trends and failure can cost you a fortune. A successful businessman possesses the entrepreneurial skills and intellect to follow up with these trends.

Jumping into the market without any survey can end up in the failure of your startup. Entrepreneurs, who run successful businesses, will tell you about the importance of having a business strategy and market orientation to stay in a race for a long time.

Time Management Skills

In business, the right time makes a whole difference and keeps you prominent within your circle. A successful businessman follows the right timing, understands partnership disadvantages, and does not rush into partnerships and deals which can damage the credibility of his brand.

An entrepreneurial skill that really makes a difference is the use of the right time for investments along with understanding the Difference Between Sole Proprietorship and Partnership. He values his money and knows how much time and money he needs to meet his goals. Therefore, he better understands when to go for a partnership business and when to go for a sole proprietor or invest it somewhere else.

Realistic Life – Not a Day Dreamer

Newbie really needs to follow this trait to keep up their spirit. Most startups are being established with this sense of achieving success overnight.  A businessman knows that only realistic goals can pave his path to accomplishment. An overnight achievement is a dream which is not the case with business.

Not only entrepreneurial skills but realistic goals make an entrepreneur successful. Successful entrepreneurs know their weaknesses and shortcomings and do not rely only on themselves but keep on expanding their circle. They make connections with more experienced people and find out specialized workforce to grow their business.

Flexible Attitude

Among many characteristics of a successful entrepreneur, flexibility counts more as it is directly related to customers and market behavior. Customers have their interests switch from one thing to another. A businessman knows about the preferences of their customers and market needs which we can surely count as an entrepreneurial skill.

Remember, not only your passion but compliance with customers’ preferences and the market’s changing trends will make your business prosperous.

Risk Taker

Taking risks is an important Entrepreneurial Characteristic. In business, one has to make decisions that can be risky but still has to take them. Being fearless is an entrepreneurial skill, which makes him undefeatable among his competitors.

  • Are you ready to take a risk by doing an experiment to try something new in a market?
  • Are you capable of handling pressure if something goes wrong?
  • Are you ready to take the risk with your money and time?
  • Are you smart enough to evaluate the risks and optimize the valuation?

Product Knowledge

It happens that most people start a business depending on the product’s popularity in the market and have no knowledge of their own. But this differentiates a successful entrepreneur from a newbie. He knows what he is selling and what his competition in the market is.

Knowing the market and product is an entrepreneurial skill that one must possess. Lack of knowledge in understanding the role of psychology in business, changing customer behavior and product optimization in the market is something with which an entrepreneur cannot take a risk.

Team Leadership Qualities

Talking about the characteristics of an entrepreneur, and having not discussed leadership skills is not justice. A successful entrepreneur is never afraid of taking a lead and selecting a team that is capable of the assigned duties. He knows how to utilize the skills of employees and is smart enough to effectively communicate, assess the capabilities of his staff & perform the right Human Resources Management Functions.

This trait, alone sometimes determines the future of a startup. Sometimes you have to make decisions in business, which involve risk and which demand clear judgment. Here, an entrepreneur will follow his decisions promptly but with ease of mind. This takes confidence to take responsibility for any outcome and he demonstrates his skills with unwavering confidence.

Capital Management

Any entrepreneurial venture is not possible without capital. There are a few methods to be with no investment. Generating profit from a business activity is a time-consuming task. Therefore, a wise and successful entrepreneur knows the importance of money in business. He/she not only carefully plans the finances but also sets aside additional capital for an emergency because it is an important facet of successful entrepreneurship.

Preparedness

Starting a business does not only require entrepreneurial skills but planning at the initial stages is mandatory to minimize risk and optimize valuation.  Business is not all about jumping into a sea of uncertainty and going with the flow. An entrepreneur has this characteristic that he knows how to use his limited resources to expand his business outreach.

Remember, all successful entrepreneurs start their setup with a business plan to address every possibility in the future. Stay ready to take your first step but do not overwhelm yourself with the fear of failure.

Stating all these characteristics of successful entrepreneurs, check it with your gut if you think you have the entrepreneurial skills necessary for a business to grow, then go ahead. Until and unless you will have this fear of failure, you are not going to achieve your dreams.
