Folks, when all and sundry have been worrying about the pandemic, also government set safety measurements to extricate the entire country from covid-19, here another threat has to wait to rise up with the announcement of Lockdown. There had a risk of increase in domestic abuse when women and children had to stick at home with abusive partners and family members respectively for a long time period.
According to the bureau of statistics, almost two in five women in Pakistan face domestic abuse and violence from their families. Unfiled statistics are much higher. The silent majority of women respond with fortitude instead of deterring the violence. Abuser lets them have it for no reason.
Abusers can be violent
All abusive ways are worth attention. Not only people in the family but also outside the house, vicious minds are abusive. They make others fragile so vulnerable don’t get the courage to strive against abusers.
Therefore, the Ministry of Human Rights took the initiative to deploy crucial measurements to rescue vulnerable women and children. It has launched a helpline service for women and children vulnerable to domestic abuse and violence. Vulnerable can register complaints on toll-free helpline number 1099 against civil, domestic, and public abuse. They can also seek advice related to domestic violence and abuse. One can also take help through call\text on exclusive WhatsApp number 0333-9085709.
Within one week of the establishment of the helpline service, the Ministry of Human Rights received 162 calls. This service may rescue the precious life of the vulnerable trapped in houses due to lockdown.
Government should need to launch some more foolproof programs. Here is an informal idea about the strategy government should consider in future
- Government should layout awareness programs against domestic abuse and violence.
- There is a need of counseling programs which invigorate vulnerable to get rid of the trauma they go through by being abused.
